Detailed History of the Process Development Division

The Formation of the Process Development Group

(Group 12, AIChE National Programming Committee)

1996-1999

The Process Development Group developed from the Pilot Plants programming area, which has been active within AIChE since the 1980’s.

The Pilot Plants area/committee (then Area 12a, now Area 12b) was the only active area in the Engineering Group (Group 12). In the early 1990’s, the Pilot Plants area contributed with two sessions to the AIChE Annual and National Meetings. In mid-1990’s Pilot Plant committee/area scope was broadened to include other activities such as benchmarking, networking, university-industry interactions, and others.

The need to expand beyond Pilot Plants to upstream and downstream process development activities became obvious.

At the November ‘96 Chicago Conference Pilot Plants Committee Meeting, Prabir Basu of Searle proposed to change the name of the "Engineering" group and to create new areas. The Committee agreed to propose to AIChE to change the group name from "Engineering" to "Process Development", and new areas were proposed and discussed.

The proposal was submitted to the AIChE National Program Committee with the support of Joe Cramer, AIChE Director of Programming, and subsequently was approved by EBPC (Executive Board of Program Committee).

At the March 1997 Houston AIChE Conference Pilot Plants Committee Meeting the new structure of the group, shown below, was agreed upon.

It was agreed that in addition to the Pilot Plant Area (now 12b), Area 12a (Process Research and Innovation) will be activated immediately.

The original leadership of the Process Development Group, elected at this meeting was: Process Development Group Chair: George Liebermann (Xerox); Process Research and Innovation Area Chair: Prabir Basu (Searle); Pilot Plants Area Chair: Mark Langer (S.C, Johnson).

It was agreed to hold annual "off-conference" Steering Committee meetings to chart the direction of the new Group.

The first Steering Committee meeting was held in July 1997 in Chicago (hosted by Prabir Basu of Searle). The following were the participants: Prabir Basu (Searle), Cawas Cooper (Air Products), John Corn (Ashland), Joe Cramer (AIChE), Bob Duggal (Ethyl), Dave Edwards (Zeton), Juergen Holzhauer (Amoco), Mark Langer (SC Johnson), George Liebermann (Xerox), Rich Palluzi (Exxon). The minutes of this meeting are a good illustration of the initial focus of the Process Development Group.

The transition to a full-fledged group, with all four areas active and expanded leadership was accomplished by the November 1999 Dallas AIChE conference.
