Carbon emissions from human activities are strongly linked to climate change. (See the CEP Special Issue 鈥淭hinking About Climate鈥� at aiche.org/cep/climate-issue.) In 2019, the U.S. emitted 5.1 billion m.t. of energy-related CO2, and globally, energy-related CO2 emissions totaled 33.1 billion m.t.
Carbon dioxide emissions contribute to warming of the atmosphere, which in turn triggers rising sea levels and increases the risk of extreme weather, including hurricanes, heatwaves, wildfires, and droughts.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the most effective method of combating global warming is to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. While more reliance on renewable energy will help to significantly reduce GHG emissions, many organizations hope to utilize carbon capture to lessen the impact of burning fossil fuels in the short term.
