The site navigation system has been redesigned. You no longer need to click “post content” to create a new navigation item and then assign it to a page. It’s all done in one place.
Main Navigation
- The main navigation is in a horizontal bar at the top of the website
- You can have a maximum of 5 parent items
- Depending on the complexity of your site, AIChE pre-configures your parent items to be the following:
- About
- Events
- Content
- Publications
- Membership
You can re-organize your menu system but we encourage this simple information architecture above. If you do choose different parent menus, be sure to choose labels with fewer than 12 characters. One word labels are best. Two word labels are okay if they are brief.
Fly-out (Children) Menus
- Under the parent menus, you can have multiple children menus
- The fly-out menu area is separated into the main (left) side and right side
- To create this separation between left and right, use a separator as shown below
- We encourage you to use the right-side menu area for 1 or 2 short, but important menu items; for example, if the parent menu is “About,” you might have the main “About Us” page and the “Contact” page on the right and all other about-related menu items on the left

Choose Type: Guided, Separator, No Link, or Outside Link
For each menu label, you will need to choose one of the following:
Guided
List pages like “Events,” “Announcements,” “Newsletters,” and “Blog posts,” are automatically created. So for the “Events” menu label, you should select the built-in list page for events. In addition, any page you create can be found in the drop down
Separator
This menu type is used to divide the left and right side of the fly-out (children) menu area for a particular parent
No Link
This menu type is used only for parent menus. It should not be used in a fly-out menu. If you do, it will confuse the user
Outside Link
If you are linking to a page outside of your site (not recommended in the navigation unless you’re linking to another AIChE or related site), you can use this menu type
