Session Co-Chairs:
- Tim Dobbs, Solazyme
- Dr. Deepti Tanjore, LBNL/ABPD
Session Description:
Speakers will discuss case studies from a wide range of industries based on the lessons learned over many years of practice. The talks in this session will show how process development spans across process research, scale up, technology transfer, and manufacturing. The attendees will be able to learn which mistakes to avoid and what areas to focus on for success commercialization of products and processes.

From Concept to Commercialization - A Case Study of Solid Bed Detergent Alkylation Process
Bipin Vora, VIP Corp. and UOP LLC, A Honeywell Company
A project from research to commercialization has to pass through not one but many hurdles; it is not a trivial matter. It is an expensive, time-consuming undertaking. From concept to commercialization, the development of new technologies may take anywhere from 1 to 20 years based on relative simplicity or complexity of its application and market condition. The investment needed for development and scale-up of the technology and the duration of the time it would take are if not always, often significantly under estimated at the research stage.
Successful technology development, from concept to commercialization requires a structured process; employing modern tools such as, Stage Gate Reviews, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA), etc. The barrier is very high, often not visualized or understood. This presentation out lines all necessary steps one must go through from research to development, scale-up and commercialization. The author will discuss this and other criteria in more detail with a case study of development and commercialization of solid acid alkylation catalyst that replaced liquid HF acid for the production of linear alkylbenzens, a detergent raw material.
It Worked in the Lab - Case Studies in Scaleup.
Ronald Bray, Jacobs Engineering
The transition from the laboratory to pilot plant to commercial scale presents some unique challenges. The success of these endeavors is dependent on free communication between all involved team members: bench chemist, analytical support, engineers and field operators. The speaker will discuss some case studies based on his past experience in making this transition as well as his experience receiving and producing Technology Transfer Packages.
The Semiconductor Industry from a 91成人短视频 Engineering Perspective
Dr. Zhihong Wang, Applied Materials
In this talk, a couple of case studies are presented to show how chemical engineering principles can be applied to understand and solve critical issues in semiconductor industry. Two topics, microdefects formation in crystalline silicon and chemical mechanical polishing (CMP), will be covered with more focus on CMP. CMP is a critical and enabling technology in modern semiconductor fabrication. Brief introduction of CMP technology will be covered, then a couple of specific CMP topics will be discussed from a chemical engineering perspective.
