LA100 Roadmap: LA鈥檚 Path to 100% Carbon Free Energy by 2035

In 2021, the LA City Council passed a motion instructing LADWP to develop a plan for achieving 100% carbon free energy by 2035. In order to provide reliable, carbon free electricity for a city with almost 4 million people, LADWP must implement several alternative and emerging energy technologies, in addition to increasing buildouts of more conventional renewable energy infrastructure鈥攍ike solar and wind. To phase out fossil fuel powered generation at LADWP鈥檚 in-basin plants and from the Intermountain Power Project, resources like green hydrogen and energy storage will be vital. LA will need a revamped and modern electric grid in order to achieve the city鈥檚 aggressive sustainability goals.
Mukund Nair is an electrical engineer in the Power System Planning Division at LADWP. Specifically, his work supports the Power System鈥檚 long-term renewable energy planning and implementation. He is also currently pursuing a master鈥檚 degree in public policy at USC.
