Tailor-made macromolecules offer the promise of providing made-to-order, low-cost materials solutions to some of the most pressing polymer and soft materials challenges of the day. Here, we will review the principles of molecular design and device operation regarding organic electronic materials. In particular, we will discuss the history and current state of the art with respect to the organic electronics field in order to provide an overview of the subject. Then, we will touch on energy conversion, light-emitting, and sensing platforms in which organic electronic materials have made significant inroads in recent years. In particular, we will discuss how the molecular design of 蟺-conjugated polymer systems is related to nanoscale and microscale structures along with how the thin film structure of organic electronic materials impacts their end-use functionality. We anticipate being able to provide a complete, yet succinct, overview of the field as an introduction to this exciting field of study.
