ABSTRACT: Over the last decade, solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power have become the lowest cost options for new generation in the electric grid.  Yet solar and wind are intermittent energy resources, so how does one integrate large amounts of these resources in the electric grid? The full answer includes sophisticated grid balancing, demand-side management, and geographic and generation diversity. But one element central to the future grid is energy storage. This presentation will provide an overview of energy storage options with focus on the role for thermal-emergy storage systems.

SPEAKER BIO: Craig is a Principal Engineer at NREL and the manager for the Thermal Energy Science & Technologies Group. He joined Solar Energy Research Institute (NREL鈥檚 predecessor) in 1990 where he worked for six years before departing for the private sector. After ten years as a principal investigator at Littleton-based ADA Technologies, Craig returned to NREL in 2008. Since 2008, Craig has led solar thermal and geothermal projects ranging from heat-transfer-fluid development, systems analysis, hybrid plant design and modeling, direct-thermal-use applications, system cooling analysis, environmental impact, thermal desalination, and advanced power systems. Craig currently leads an $8 million project under the U.S. DOE鈥檚 Gen3 Concentrating Solar Power program that is investigating liquid-based, high-temperature heat transfer and storage systems for CSP. Dr. Turchi has over 50 journal publications and is an inventor on ten patents. Beyond NREL, Craig enjoys hiking, camping, canoeing, and tandem cycling with his wife.
