Join us for a tour of the Gary R Tomkins Operation Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The center was completed in 2006 and houses the operations control room for the most complex and sophisticated chilled water generating system in the State of North Carolina. It operates four chilled water plants, North, South, Cobb and Tomkins, which comprise a single virtual chilled water control system. The center also houses three 2,000 ton electric chillers, two 2,250 ton plate and frame heat exchangers and the pumps for a 5,000,000 gallon thermal storage tank.
The tour will be led by Douglas Mullen, Chilled Water Systems Manager. Douglas studied engineering at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, coming to UNC-CH in 2007. Douglas also worked at Iowa State University at their power plant for 11 years.
An optional dinner meeting will be held afterwards at for those who wish to socialize over a traditional southern meal.
Members and guests will be responsible for their own orders.
