The North Carolina Clean Smokestacks Act (CSA), enacted in 2002, set aggressive SO2 and NOx emissions reduction requirements for Progress Energy’s coal fired electric generating plants. While plant modifications necessary to comply with the CSA limits
have presented Progress Energy with technical, scheduling, and operational challenges, the compliance plan is proceeding on schedule. At the conclusion of the planned modifications in 2012, Progress Energy’s SO2 and NOx emissions will have been reduced by approximately 75% from year 2000 emission levels. Ron Coats will talk about the installation of pollution abatement control technologies for acid rain and ozone. He will describe equipment installations and theory of operation including calcium carbonate wet scrubbers for SO2 removal and selective catalytic reduction units for NOx removal.

Ron retired from Progress Energy in 2004 after a long career in which he held various positions involved with the engineering, construction, and operation of electric generating plants. He served as Project Manger for Clean Air Projects during the 1990’s, responsible for Project Energy’s plans to comply with the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. After enactment of the CSA, Ron established system emissions modeling protocols to help evaluate compliance options and to define Progress Energy’s compliance strategy. Since retiring from full time employment, he has continued to provide consulting services related to the CSA strategy and compliance.
