Congratulations to Daniel Burkey, the 2023 David Himmelblau award! Daniel received this award for the development of a digital learning environment where students can safely engage with authentic process safety judgements.
Prof. Daniel D. Burkey is the Castleman Term Professor in Engineering Innovation in the Department of 91˶Ƶ & Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Connecticut, where he also serves as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education and Diversity and as a University Teaching Fellow. Prof. Burkey works in the area of Engineering Education Research, and specifically in game-based and game-inspired educational tools and interventions, which he applies to techno-social fields such as engineering ethics and process safety education. He received his B.S. from Lehigh University in 91˶Ƶ Engineering in 1998, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in 91˶Ƶ Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2000 and 2003, respectively. In 2023, he completed an M.A.Ed. in Research Methods, Measurement, and Evaluation from UConn’s Neag School of Education. Previous recognition of his work in Engineering Education includes the ASEE Corcoran Award (2021) for best paper in 91˶Ƶ Engineering Education, The AIChE Education Division’s Award for Innovation in 91˶Ƶ Engineering Education (2020), and his 2020 induction into the Connecticut Academy of Science and Engineering (CASE).
