In observance of Black History Month 2025, ChEnected presents a series of posts reflecting on the progress of Black engineers in the AIChE community and beyond. The theme for this year鈥檚 Black History Month is 鈥淎frican Americans and Labor.鈥 It鈥檚 essential to recognize the contributions of Black chemical engineers who鈥檝e paved the way for minorities in STEM today, as their labor still impacts the field profoundly.
Black chemical engineers throughout history
The contributions of Black scientists, chemists, and chemical engineers continue to shape the field today. The work of so many, such as , , , and , have helped others overcome racial barriers, advanced science, and improved lives for millions. We look back on these contributions as we look ahead to advance today's standout talent that will contribute to science and society.
Ways to celebrate Black History Month with AIChE
AIChE continues to uphold the IDEAL standard by supporting programs, conferences, and communities that foster inclusion. Below are some ways to contribute to the Institute鈥檚 efforts to celebrate Black History Month and further its mission of inclusion.
Spread the word about FOSSI
The Future of STEM Scholars Intitiative (FOSSI) is made possible by the 91成人短视频 (AIChE), the American Chemistry Council (ACC), Chemours, and HBCU Week Foundation. This remarkable initiative provides scholarships and mentorship for historically under-represented groups pursuing preferred STEM degrees. FOSSI partners with major industry sponsors to offer financial support, internships, and career development opportunities, and nurture the next generation of chemical engineers.
Join MAC
AIChE's Minority Affairs Committee (MAC) plays an essential role in supporting the professional development of underrepresented groups in chemical engineering. MAC works to increase diversity in AIChE鈥檚 membership and leadership through outreach programs, mentorship, and facilitating networking opportunities. MAC also organizes events and initiatives to promote the participation of minority professionals in the chemical engineering community.
Attend the 5th AfroBioTech Conference
Afrobiotech (Atlanta, GA, February 16鈥18, 2025) is an important conference dedicated to promoting innovation in biotechnology, particularly within the African and African American communities. By hosting leading researchers and practitioners from around the world, Afrobiotech fosters discussions on cutting-edge biotechnological advancements and the challenges faced by underrepresented groups. This event also highlights the growing role of African Americans in biotechnology and chemical engineering, creating pathways for future leaders in the industry.
Read and share stories from our BHM series
The AIChE Black History Month (BHM) series is a collection of articles and interviews that spotlight the accomplishments and stories of Black chemical engineers. Each feature serves to educate, inspire, and celebrate the contributions of these trailblazers. Through this series, AIChE reflects on the past while promoting a future of inclusion in the chemical engineering community.
These programs and initiatives are instrumental in ensuring that the legacy of Black chemical engineers continues to inspire and influence the field of chemical engineering. Share one of our stories on social media and/or with colleagues to join AIChE in celebrating the labor and achievements of Black engineers this Black History Month.
