Award	The June Wispelwey Fellowship will provide a grant to assist one scientist or engineer per year who will lead a project important to technical, business, or community advancements in the biological engineering field. The fellow will work with AIChE’s SBE to contribute critical biotech collaboration and improvement efforts. Recipients will become part of a network of June Wispelwey Fellows, skilled in demonstrating leadership across multifaceted efforts and thus will have opportunities to build partnerships with key entities across the biotech industry. Potential topic areas will be provided in the application form. Applicants are encouraged to provide their own original ideas for projects. The Fellowship grant or salary will vary based on the project, timeline, and available funding, with a maximum funding amount of $10,000.

Nomination Instructions	Application Procedure Applications may be submitted at any time of year by using this form. Any applications received after the above cut off date will be held until the next award cycle. In order to complete the form, you will need a project statement (maximum 500 words); a project timeline and description (maximum 1000 words); the applicant's CV (maximum 5 pages); and two letters of recommendation. Selection of the Awardee Awards Committee The chair of the Awards Committee will be nominated by and shall be approved by the SBE board. The chair will have the authority to establish the committee. The SBE Board will review and approve the Awards committee membership. Each member will serve a three year term, with no more than two members rotating off in a given year. Responsibility of the Chair Distribute application.. Oversee the selection process. If the chair deems appropriate, a confidential discussion through mail or conference call may be conducted at the beginning of selection. In recognition of June Wispelwey’s outstanding leadership as the founding Executive Director of the Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) and outgoing Executive Director and CEO of AIChE, the June Wispelwey Bio Leadership Fellowship was established in her honor.

Biotechnology Progress Award for Excellence in Biological Engineering Publication

Award	The award will consist of a $3,000 honorarium and up to $500 to defray travel expenses to the award presentation, underwritten by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The winner will be expected to deliver a webinar on a subject in their area of expertise, or author a related topical or review paper for publication in Biotechnology Progress.

Nomination Instructions	Candidates will be engineers or scientists active within the areas of biomedical engineering, biological engineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineer and related fields. There are no specific geographic, membership or age requirements, but attendance at the AIChE Annual Meeting is a condition of acceptance of the award. Award	This annual award recognizes individuals for their contributions to the field and to the practice of biochemical engineering through their position in industry or academia as exemplified by Professor Wang in his 50 years of contributions. In appreciation of Professor Wang’s long commitment, dedication, and contribution to the Biochemical Technology (BIOT) division of American 91��˶��Ƶ Society, the Division of Food, Pharmaceuticals and Bioengineering (Division 15) of the 91��˶��Ƶ, and the Society for Biological Engineering (SBE), this award is administered by SBE and will be presented to the awardee in alternate years at the AIChE Annual Meetings (Fall) and at the ACS spring meeting. The endowment shall provide the monetary award to the selected awardee annually. See Founding Donors

Nomination Instructions	Nomination Procedure There are no restrictions on who may nominate individuals for this award and an announcement of solicitation will be made annually through portals of SBE, Division 15, and BIOT of the ACS. Nominations shall be submitted to the Nomination Committee (NC) by email at sbeawards@aiche.org. In order to be considered for the award, the nominee must not have received an award from SBE (e.g., the James E. Bailey award or the June Wispelwey Bio Leadership Fellowship) in the four years preceding the award year. The nomination documentation may consist of a nomination form, the nominee’s resume, a letter from the nomination committee, and may also include supporting letters. Individuals recommended by the NC along with documentation also will be submitted to the Selection Committee. The Nomination Committee shall be composed of three past awardees (each serving a three year term) and shall look out for individuals who have made major contributions through research, education, or practice of biochemical engineering. The NC shall look especially at those from industry whose colleagues tend not to be familiar with the nomination process. The members of the nomination committee are to be nominated by SBE and approved by the chairs of Division 15 and BIOT. Selection of the Awardee Selection Committee The selection committee meets in alternating years. In odd years, the selection committee convenes to review submitted nominations, and selects two winners: The first, whose award will be given at the AIChE Annual Meeting in the current year, and the second winner. who will be recognized at the ACS/BIOT meeting the following year (typically, the ACS Spring Meeting). The selection committee does not meet in even years. Nominations received in even years will be held for the next selection cycle. The chair of the selection committee shall be a past award winner and will be nominated by SBE and shall be approved by Division 15 and BIOT. The chair may select up to three (3) past award recipients who are not on the nomination committee to serve on the committee. The committee will be comprised by past award winners, but should include a member selected by BIOT, Division 15 and SBE. Division 15, BIOT, and SBE will review and approve the selection committee in December of each year. Responsibility of the Chair Assemble the committee members. Distribute nomination documentation. Oversee the selection process. If the chair deems appropriate, a confidential discussion through mail or conference call may be conducted at the beginning of selection. Selection Procedure The chair may choose to have a discussion of candidates. Each member has one vote, including the chair. The chair may elect to have a two round or three round voting, especially in the case that the number of candidates is large. Selection Criteria The selection of awardees will be based on the following criteria: Innovation through research, education, or practice of biochemical engineering Successful development of new products, processes or services Research at the interface of biological science and engineering Significant publication, patents, or technology development in the field Demonstrated economic or societal impact thru innovation or practice of biochemical engineering. Economic impact would include gross revenues generated by a new product or process, cost savings made possible by a new process, reductions in environmental impact, or benefits to health and safety in the workplace, or of consumers and patients.

In appreciation of Prof. Daniel I.C. Wang’s contributions to education and research in biochemical engineering as well as his technological innovations in bioprocessing, this award has been established by the Society for Biological Engineering.

Nomination Instructions	Current members of the Managing Board of the Society for Biological Engineering (SBE) are ineligible. Awardees of other SBE awards in the past four (4) years , e.g., the D.I.C. Wang Award and the June Wispelwey Bio Leadership Fellowship, are also ineligible.
